JAL Round-Trip Trick: Business Class to Europe for 80,000 Miles

We found business class from New York to Madrid for 42,000 Japan Airlines miles one-way. Citi points now transfer to JAL with a 30% bonus through October 24. Here’s the real math, how to book it step by step, and the catches to know before you move a single point.

Iberia Business Class Cabin

Quick answer

You can fly business class from New York (JFK) to Madrid for 42,000 Japan Airlines (JAL) miles one-way, or 80,000 miles round trip. We found this saver space ourselves while writing this post. JAL prices partner flights by the total distance of your whole trip, not by region.

Right now Citi ThankYou points move to JAL with a 30% bonus, through October 24, 2026. So about 33,000 Citi points covers one-way, and about 62,000 covers the round trip.

There's also a well-known round-trip trick with JAL that can save 35,000 miles. On this route it saves only 4,000. Below is the real math, so you know when the trick pays off and when to skip it.

How JAL prices partner award flights

JAL Mileage Bank uses a distance-based chart for partner airlines like American, LATAM and Emirates. It adds up the miles you actually fly on every segment, then puts the total into a price band. (JAL)

Most programs price each direction on its own. JAL prices the whole ticket as one trip. That's the whole trick.

Here's what that means in real life:

  • New York to Madrid is about 3,600 flown miles each way. One-way lands in a cheap band: 42,000 miles in business. The round trip is about 7,200 miles and costs 80,000. Two one-ways would be 84,000. You save 4,000.
  • Miami to Madrid is about 4,424 flown miles each way. That's just over a band line, so one-way jumps to 60,000. The round trip is 85,000. Two one-ways would be 120,000. You save 35,000. (Thrifty Traveler)

So the round-trip trick pays off big only when each way sits just above a band line. When each way is under the line, one-ways are already cheap.

One rule: the whole round trip has to be on one partner airline. Mix American and British Airways, and JAL uses a different chart that's usually worse.

Real example: New York to Madrid in business class

These are real saver prices we found through JAL, in business class, per person.

JAL

Citi moves points in 1,000-point blocks, so the Citi figures are rounded up. With the bonus, 62,000 Citi points becomes 80,600 JAL miles.

Our honest take: on this route, book two one-ways. You pay 4,000 more miles but can change or cancel each direction on its own. If your dates are locked, the round trip is the cheapest option.

We also searched Miami to Madrid for this post and couldn't find round-trip saver space on our dates. The 85,000-mile price is real when seats open up, so keep checking.

The same math works on LATAM. Miami to Buenos Aires in business is 60,000 miles one-way, or 85,000 round trip. (Thrifty Traveler)

How to book it, step by step

  1. Open a free JAL Mileage Bank account today. New accounts usually have to be 60 days old before you can book an award. The clock starts when you sign up, not when you transfer. (AwardWallet)
  2. Pick a route where each way is just over a band line. The trick pays off most when one-way distance sits a bit above 4,000 flown miles, like Miami to Madrid. Check the distance on JAL's site before you transfer.
  3. Find saver seats on one airline, both ways. Look for American business saver space on your outbound and return dates. JAL members can see seats on the JAL website after logging in.
  4. Transfer only what you need. Move Citi ThankYou points to JAL at 1:1 (premium Citi cards). The 30% bonus runs through October 24, 2026. Reported transfer times range from instant to over a week, so don't leave it to the last day. (One Mile at a Time)
  5. Book it as one round-trip ticket. Do it online when you can. If the site won't price the round trip, call JAL. Their US number per Thrifty Traveler is 800-525-3663.

The catches (read these before you transfer)

This is a great deal, but it's not for everyone. Points transfers can't be undone.

  • 60-day wait for new accounts. If you open a JAL account today, you likely can't book until mid-December. Bilt and Capital One transfers get around this after 7 days. Citi transfers don't. (Thrifty Traveler)
  • Family only. JAL awards are for you and family by blood or marriage. A relative with a different last name may need to prove it. Booking for friends isn't allowed.
  • No changes. You can't change a ticket after it's issued. You can cancel for ¥3,100 (about $20) and rebook.
  • Miles expire. JAL miles last 36 months from when they post. They can't be extended. (Frequent Miler)
  • Not all Citi cards get 1:1. Premium Citi cards transfer at 1:1. No-annual-fee Citi cards only get 1:0.7.
  • Seats aren't guaranteed. The bonus only helps if you find saver space on both legs. Search first, transfer second.

When this trick doesn't help

  • Short transatlantic routes. New York to London is only about 3,450 miles each way. One-ways already land in a cheap band, so a round trip saves little or nothing.
  • British Airways and Air France flights. These come with higher surcharges, around $200 to $250 each way on BA. Air France awards often need a phone call to book. (Frequent Miler)
  • Emirates from the US. The famous New York to Milan Emirates version of this deal is basically gone. US award space on Emirates hasn't shown up through JAL in over a month. (Thrifty Traveler)
  • Open-ended plans. If you don't know your return date yet, two one-ways give you more freedom. Paying 35,000 extra miles for that can still be worth it.
